Automation in a hydroelectric power plant: Integration of new electrical turbine controllers

This month, our KIMA team successfully commissioned two additional Straflo machines in collaboration with the end customer. The retrofit of the two machines began last fall, when a machine builder comprehensively modernized the entire mechanical system.

KIMA’s task was to completely replace the old relay technology with modern automation technology. A Siemens Simatic S7 1500 controller was used, into which KIMA’s proprietary turbine controller is also integrated. This ensures optimal and efficient operation of the turbines.

As part of the project, our installation team installed the new switchgear, expanded the cable routes, and completely rewired and reconnected both machines.
The systems continue to be operated from the power plant control room via the existing WinCC system, which was functionally expanded by KIMA. The connection to the central control room is established via an IEC104 interface. A Simatic HMI was also integrated into the control cabinets for adjusting the turbine governor and for diagnostic work directly on site.

This means that a total of four Straflo machines with modernized technology are now in operation at this hydroelectric power plant, representing an important step toward reliable and efficient plant operation.

We are pleased to be able to make a further contribution to the energy transition through our work.
